Grassroots Farm and Dairy is a family run sheep dairy in Madison County owned by Andrea and Tim Vangunst. Andrea found her way into farming after hiking the Appalachian Trail, and the couple started with just eight sheep from a Virginia dairy. Today they run a grass based farm that uses every part of the animal: milk, meat, and wool.
Raw sheep milk is available through their herdshare. In North Carolina, a herdshare is the legal way to get raw milk. You buy a share of the herd, pay a boarding fee to cover the animals’ care, and in return you receive milk from the animals you co-own. In 2020 the farm earned Grade A dairy certification, so their sheep milk yogurt can also be sold at markets, restaurants, and stores around Asheville.
Our tip: If you’ve never tried sheep milk, start with the yogurt. It’s rich, creamy, and a great option for people who don’t do well with cow dairy.
