Side Hill Acres is a goat dairy in Candor, south of Ithaca, founded by Russell and Rita Kellogg in 1987. The Kelloggs started making cheese in 1994 and today care for a herd of well over 100 goats.
Raw goat milk is sold by the gallon right at the farm. New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized.
Goat milk is a great option for people who don’t do well with cow dairy. The farm store also stocks their cheeses, kefir, and yogurt, and tours include a chance to try milking.
Our tip: Call ahead for raw milk so they can set aside what you need, then take a few minutes to meet the goats.
