Big Brook Farm in Lee Center, north of Rome, is a young dairy with a great story. Andrew Smith started it in 2014 at just 16 years old with ten cows, after getting his first Brown Swiss calf from his grandfather at age eight. The herd now numbers around 40 head and grazes in summer.
New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized. The farm’s self serve store also carries their beef, pork, and maple syrup, along with goods from neighboring farms.
Our tip: Bring a cooler. Between the milk, meat, and local extras, it’s easy to fill a cart.
