Essex Farm was founded in 2004 by Kristin and Mark Kimball, and it’s become one of the best known farms in the Adirondacks. Kristin wrote about the farm’s early years in her memoir The Dirty Life. The farm isn’t certified organic but follows organic standards, and its Jersey cows are grass-fed.
Raw milk is sold from the farm’s self serve store, open around the clock, and you can pay by cash, card, or Venmo. New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized.
Our tip: The farm is about a mile from the Essex to Charlotte ferry, so it’s an easy stop if you’re crossing Lake Champlain.
