Avery’s Branch Farms started in 2007, when Tim Alexander left a 20 year career building bridges to farm with his family. They began with one Jersey cow and a milking machine, and today the herd has grown to around 70 grass-fed Jerseys.

The cows graze unfertilized pasture year round, with hay in winter, and receive no antibiotics or growth hormones. Virginia doesn’t allow raw milk to be sold directly, so farms offer herd shares instead. You buy a share of the herd, pay a monthly boarding fee for the animals’ care, and receive milk from the cows you co-own. A full share gets you a gallon a week.

The family also raises eggs, poultry, grass-fed beef, and pork raised in the woods, and hosts farm tours and events throughout the year.

Our tip: If you’re building an animal-based pantry, this is a one stop farm. Ask about adding eggs or meat to your milk pickup.
