Muddy River Dairy is right on Route 7 in Otego, just off I-88 between Oneonta and Binghamton. The family milks a mix of Brown Swiss, Jersey, and Holstein cows, bottles milk every day, and grows most of the feed on the farm.
New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized. The farm store also stocks eggs, meat, seasonal produce, and baked goods on the weekends.
Our tip: Call ahead if you want five gallons or more. Farm tours are available with a little notice.
