Heritage Era Farmstead Market is run by the Amish family of David Kline, who moved to Owego from Holmes County, Ohio. Their Jersey cows produce rich cream top milk, and the farm is inspected by the state every month.
Raw milk sells for around $6 a gallon or $3.50 a half gallon. New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized.
Our tip: If you need five gallons or more, call ahead to preorder. Afternoon visits are best arranged by phone too.
