Slate Hill Homestead is a small family farm in Sharon Springs, in Schoharie County, owned by Jake and Elsie Zook. Their Jersey cows are 100% grass-fed and A2/A2, and the family farms beyond organic standards while transitioning to certification.
Along with raw milk, they make raw butter, kefir, sour cream, and yogurt. New York allows raw milk to be sold only on the farm where it’s produced, and only by farms holding a state raw milk permit. Permitted farms are inspected and have their milk sampled and tested by the state, and they post a sign letting customers know the milk is unpasteurized.
Our tip: Raw butter from grass-fed Jerseys is hard to find. Grab some while you’re there, and ask about scheduling a farm tour.
